“Update” – Summer 2007

Hey Friends,

I’ve made it to Mexico City after a wonderful 2 weeks on the Immersion trip to San Diego & Tijuana. Sara, Jackie, Alvaro, Megan, Ashley, Christina and I had a blast and learned/experienced a lot during those two weeks. As always, we had a great stay at the Casa YMCA and learned alot from the staff, the family and the kids passing through. In San Diego, we meet with many passionate people that work hard for migrant rights everyday.

For me, highlights from the organizations were: meeting the youth at the Casa YMCA, traveling out to the desert (113 degrees) with Enrique Morones and simply knowing how many people are working towards helping others in their community. Don’t worry, we also had lots of fun; for example, a night at the Tijuana Circus/Strip Show and listening to “Lean like a Cholo” (Elbows up, side to side).

I’m sure that pictures will be posted soon from everyone in the group. Also, our group and the work of Border Angel, Enrique Morones was in the Los Angeles paper, La Opinion, yesterday. Cool, huh?

Sunday evening I made it to Mexico City. I was greeted right off the plane by Mauro and Roberto. Training started yesterday with our diverse staff of program coordinators and facilitators. Our group represents several countries, languages, varied experiences and areas of study. Some of worked with the proyecto in the past, others not. The 10ish of us are staying at the Casa de los Amigos in the historic area of Mexico City.

We have two more days of training here, then we go visit the communities in la Sierra Norte de Puebla where we’ll be working for the summer. Then, on Sunday, our participants arrive and the Proyecto officially begins. Tonight, I am looking forward to hanging out with my friend Mauricio from the YMCA in DF. We met last year at Mano a Mano and worked together in the Casa YMCA in Piedras Negras, Coahuila.

I think that’s all for now. I’ll try to post again when I can. I miss everyone lots and I hope that you’re all enjoying summer.
